Integrate Kisi with Ferb

Ferb is a booking and revenue platform for fitness and wellness studios, bringing together scheduling, memberships, payments and member apps. Connect Ferb with Kisi to manage door access automatically from memberships, bookings and access passes, so studios can welcome members without issuing and removing access by hand.

info

This is a partner-built integration, maintained and supported by the partner.

Prerequisites

  • A Kisi organization with installed, online doors and controllers
  • Kisi organization owner rights, and an API key created from the owner's account
  • An active Ferb account with owner or admin access. The integration is available to every Ferb customer.
  • An address for each location, chosen with the address lookup in Ferb under Settings > Locations & rooms. Ferb uses it to check that someone opening a door from their phone is at the studio.

You don't need any existing Kisi group IDs. Ferb creates and manages its own groups.

Generate a Kisi API key

You need to have organization administrator or organization owner rights to create an API key. We recommend creating API keys from the organization owner's account, to avoid the API key becoming invalid when an organization admin loses their admin rights.

  1. Sign in to Kisi
  2. On the top right corner, click on your name and click on My Account
  3. Next, select the API tab and click on Add API Key
  4. Enter the name for the API key and your Kisi password and click Add
  5. Copy the API key shown on the screen and click Close

Set up the integration in Ferb

  1. Sign in to the Ferb dashboard as an owner or admin
  2. Go to Settings > Apps & connections. Under Add apps, choose Kisi, then click Add Kisi
  3. Under Set up, click Connect next to Connect with an API key. Enter your Kisi API key and click Connect and test
  4. Click Confirm next to Confirm places and doors. Under Places, match each Kisi place to its Ferb location. Under Doors, choose who each door opens for: Members and staff, Staff only or Not opened by Ferb
  5. Click Check next to Check the report and turn on. The report shows how many members Ferb checked, how many would be given access and how many would lose access
  6. Select I've checked who would lose access, then click Turn on door access
info

Ferb starts in safe mode and changes nothing in Kisi until you turn door access on.

Once door access is live, the Kisi page in Ferb shows unlocks over the last 30 days, refused unlocks, members with access, and an activity log with the reason for every refused unlock.

Configure member access

Memberships and open access

Use an open access service for facilities such as a gym floor, sauna or pool:

  1. Go to Services > Open access and create or open a service. Choose where it's Offered at and set its Opening hours
  2. Under How it runs, set Members to Walk in to let eligible unlimited members enter without booking, or to Book a time to require a booking
  3. (Optional) To sell day or timed visits, add them under Passes on the same service
  4. Go to Products > Memberships and open a membership. Under What members get, choose Unlimited for entry without booking, and use Covers to add the service from the Open access tab
What the customer holdsWhen it opens the door
Unlimited membership that covers the serviceDuring the service's opening hours, without booking, when Members is set to Walk in
Membership with a visit allowance or tickets, or a bundleThrough a valid booking. Owning it alone doesn't open the door
PassOn its booked day or during its booked time, within the service's opening hours
Class, appointment or event bookingDuring the booking's door window

A door set to Members and staff under Doors on the Kisi page opens for anyone whose booking, pass or membership covers it.

Bookings

By default, bookings open the member doors at their location from 30 minutes before the start until 15 minutes after the end. Cancelled bookings no longer open the door.

To change how early members can open the door:

  1. Go to Settings > Locations & rooms and open the location
  2. Under Door access, set Members can open the door to 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes before

Staff

Staff get every door at their locations, including staff-only doors. Roles start as Not managed by Ferb.

  1. Go to Settings > Check-in
  2. Under Doors, in Staff can open the doors, set when each role can open the doors. Owners and admins, Managers, Front desk and Teachers can each be Always, During opening hours, Around the classes they teach or Not managed by Ferb
  3. Use With a margin of to set the minutes before and after opening hours or a class

How access syncs

Ferb updates access automatically when eligibility changes. Membership changes normally sync within seconds. Booked access windows are also checked every two minutes, and an hourly reconciliation catches missed changes. These are processing intervals, not a guaranteed delivery time.

  • Membership end dates - a scheduled cancellation keeps membership access until its effective end date. When a membership ends or a pause takes effect, Ferb removes the access that membership provided.
  • Safe mode - under Door access on the Kisi page, you can switch back to safe mode. Ferb then stops changing who's in Kisi and everyone keeps the access they have, so an ending membership keeps opening doors until door access is live again.
  • Pausing - turning off Open doors with Ferb under Sending stops members opening doors from the app and stops Ferb changing Kisi. Kisi's own credentials keep working.

Member entry

Members can open doors with the studio's Ferb-powered app, a booking or pass link in their phone's browser, or an existing linked Kisi card or fob. Tap to unlock is available in the member app with compatible Kisi readers. The browser link doesn't require the Kisi app.

note

Reader-based entry uses Kisi's access controls. Browser entry, and app entry without tap to unlock turned on, use the organization's API key and Ferb's own eligibility and location checks. Kisi group restrictions, such as reader, geofence and primary device restrictions, don't apply to these unlocks.

Other important information

  • Manage rules in Ferb - change products, opening hours and location addresses in Ferb. Ferb maintains its own Kisi groups, schedules and door activity webhook, and overwrites manual edits to the schedules it manages.
  • Existing Kisi groups - Ferb leaves groups it didn't create untouched. Once you've tested Ferb-managed access, remove any old groups whose permissions Ferb replaces. Otherwise those groups keep granting access independently.
  • Attendance - door openings can check members in to booked classes and record open access visits. To stop door openings checking members in, go to Settings > Check-in and turn off Opening the door checks members in.
  • Removing Kisi - members stop opening doors from the app straight away and Ferb stops changing Kisi. People Ferb added stay in Kisi until you remove them there.
