Elevators
Most multi-tenant buildings use elevators to transport people and goods to and from various floors, such as garages, lobbies, and the floors above. They are part of the access path, and by supporting elevators Kisi can securely cover most access paths in their entirety.
Kisi supports two types of elevators:
- Relay-based elevators, natively supported by Kisi
- Dispath-based elevators, supported via the Braxos gateway
Relay-based elevators
Relay-based elevators are legacy or simpler elevators that use buttons inside the elevator car to send the elevator to specified floors. The user needs to press the button of the floor they want to reach inside the elevator car. With the Kisi elevator solution, the (Kisi controlled) buttons are initially disabled and the user cannot send the elevator to any of the access control restricted floors.
To gain access, the user has to present their credential – e.g. card or phone – at the Kisi Reader. The Kisi Reader then communicates with the Kisi Controller to enable the buttons of the floors the user is authorized to reach. The user may then press the button to send the elevator car to the desired floor. If the user's credentials are valid and at least one floor is authorized, the reader will present positive feedback, otherwise, the reader will present negative feedback.
In summary
- Every floor has a button inside the elevator car
- To press a (Kisi controlled) button, the user needs to present valid credentials to the Kisi Reader inside the elevator car
- On positive feedback, the user may press the button of the desired floor to send the elevator car there
Depending on the elevator make and model, buttons may or may not light up once enabled and/or pressed.
Dispatch-based elevators
Dispatch-based elevators offer terminals in the elevator hall on every floor that direct to an elevator based on the specified floor. This type of elevator is used in modern, medium to large setups with multiple adjacent elevators. The user needs to press the button of the floor the user wants to reach outside the elevator car on a terminal display usually placed at the front of the elevator hall. The terminal then directs the user to one of the elevators. With the Kisi elevator solution, (Braxos) access control restricted buttons are not initially enabled/visible.
To gain access, the user has to present their credential – e.g. card or phone – at the Kisi Reader next to the terminal. The Kisi Reader then communicates with the terminal (indirectly through Braxos) to enable/display buttons for authorized floors. The user may then press one of the buttons, upon which the terminal directs the user to an appropriate elevator (door).
In summary
- Every floor and its group of adjacent elevator stops has a terminal with buttons for every floor
- To press a (Braxos controlled) button on the terminal, the user needs to present valid credentials to the Kisi Reader next to the terminal
- On positive feedback, the user may press the button of the desired floor and is directed to an appropriate elevator

Elevator access always requires tapping on the reader. This means that users cannot access elevators by tapping in the Kisi mobile app or by using email-based credentials.
Elevator event history limitations
In the Events history, admins can see when a user utilizes an elevator. However, for users with access to multiple floors, they won't be able to see the specific floor the user has visited.
