Landlord scenario with mobile and physical credential unlocks
Use case example
As a tenant in a multi-office building, you may encounter a main entrance door that uses a legacy access control system. However, with Kisi, you can still ensure continuous access from the entrance door all the way to your own office door.
By wiring the existing legacy controller to the Kisi controller, you can utilize Kisi's card and mobile tap in-app unlocks to unlock the main entrance. This allows for a seamless transition between the two doors, providing a secure and efficient solution for accessing your office.
Benefits
- Minimum hardware changes
- Maintain the landlord’s system’s functionality
- Enable physical card and mobile in-app unlocks at the main entrance with Kisi
How it works
This deployment preserves the landlord's existing access control system while adding Kisi functionality. The legacy controller remains the primary system, with Kisi operating in parallel to provide additional access methods.
Power supplies are required for the Network Switch, Kisi Controller Pro 2, and legacy controller. Check the individual hardware documentation for appropriate DC power adapters.
Access logic
Physical credential access
- The user taps a card on the legacy reader
- The legacy controller receives the credential first and immediately unlocks the door if it recognizes the credential
- Simultaneously, the credential data is transmitted to Kisi through the Wiegand board's input channel
- Kisi verifies and authorizes the credential against its own database
- If Kisi recognizes the credential, it sends an unlock request back to the legacy controller through the Wiegand board's output channel
- The legacy controller processes the unlock request (though the door may already be unlocked from step 2)
Mobile app access
- The user taps to unlock in the Kisi mobile app
- Kisi cloud verifies the credential and sends unlock command to the controller
- The controller transmits unlock command to the legacy controller which opens the door strike
This dual-path approach ensures that existing landlord credentials continue to work exactly as before, while Kisi credentials provide additional access methods without interfering with the legacy system.
As this deployment preserves the landlord's legacy system while adding Kisi functionality, available access options include physical credentials through the legacy reader and mobile in-app unlocks. Mobile Tap to unlock, MotionSense, and Bluetooth unlocks are not available as they require Kisi readers. See migration paths to check what access options are available for different deployment methods.
